Emotion and Tradition: The VIII Puerto Sherry Classic Week Pays Tribute to Javier Vallejo ‘Mazinger’

The Bay of Cádiz is experiencing the start of the VIII Puerto Sherry Classic Week-Pedro Bores Memorial with great intensity. More than just a regatta, this event has established itself as an essential gathering for those who value the preservation of nautical heritage, combining high-level competition with deep emotional significance following the recent passing of the sailor from Cádiz, Javier Vallejo Muñoz, affectionately known as “Mazinger.”

An Opening Marked by Memory and Hospitality

The opening ceremony, held on the terrace of the Hotel Puerto Sherry, brought together the elite of the sailing world, authorities, and sector representatives. Álvaro González Camacho, Classic Sailing representative at the Club Náutico Puerto Sherry, hosted an event where sport intertwined with social recognition.

During the ceremony, the president of the club, Valle de la Riva, dedicated moving words to the memory of Javier Vallejo ‘Mazinger’. In a show of support, a citizen initiative was promoted among attendees to request that the Cádiz City Council dedicate a public space on the Alameda in his honor, proposing a square and viewpoint in his favorite spot overlooking the sea.

The Value of Nautical Heritage in the Bay of Cádiz

The regatta, taking place from June 19 to 21, stands out for the quality of its fleet. According to Paco Coro, president of the Andalusian Sailing Federation, the event is an unmissable date on the national calendar thanks to the commendable effort made by owners to keep alive historic vessels that are, in themselves, sailing museum pieces.

The inaugural day concluded with a fellowship dinner at the Puerto Sherry facilities, allowing crews and organizers to build bonds before starting the races in the waters of Cádiz.

Organization and Institutional Support

The success of this edition is the result of the joint work of the Club Náutico Puerto Sherry and the Spanish Classic Sailing Foundation, with the delegation of the Spanish Royal Sailing Federation. The regatta also receives key backing from:

  • Collaborating entities: Andalusian Sailing Federation, RANC, AEBEC, and the City Council of El Puerto de Santa María.
  • Sponsors: Marina Puerto Santa María, Regional Government of Andalusia (Junta de Andalucía), Provincial Council of Cádiz (Diputación de Cádiz), and REPSOL.
