11 Aug Puerto Sherry Pays Tribute to Its Roots with Book Launch
The Origins of Puerto Sherry by Jerónimo Ybarra Honors the Vision of Founder José María Ybarra
El Puerto de Santa María, August 8, 2025 – Puerto Sherry hosted the launch of The Origins of Puerto Sherry, a new book by Jerónimo Ybarra that retraces the historical and human journey behind one of Southern Europe’s most ambitious nautical projects. The work captures the challenges, achievements, and vision that shaped this landmark on the Bay of Cádiz.
A Tribute to a Visionary Leader
The book also stands as a heartfelt homage to José María Ybarra, a driving force in the creation of the marina. His ability to forge alliances, unite stakeholders, and envision Puerto Sherry as a hub for economic, social, and sporting growth is woven throughout the narrative.
“This book tells the story of how it all began, while expressing gratitude to those who made it possible. Above all, it honors my father, whose dedication was crucial to the birth of the project,” said author Jerónimo Ybarra during the launch.
History Through Records and Firsthand Accounts
Drawing on meticulous archival research and personal testimonies, the book covers every stage of the marina’s development — from early planning and administrative hurdles to legal disputes and key strategic decisions. It offers a vivid account of the persistence required to bring Puerto Sherry to life.
A Symbolic and Emotional Gathering
The presentation took place on the terrace of Hotel Puerto Sherry and featured the participation of Puerto Sherry president Valle de la Riva and local artist Juan Suárez Ávila, who played a role in the port’s formative years. Original collaborators, local entrepreneurs, and members of the nautical community also attended.
As part of the event, a commemorative plaque honoring José María Ybarra was unveiled, witnessed by his children Jerónimo, Leopoldo, Marcial, José María (VI Count of Ybarra), Carmen, and Diego Ybarra Sainz de la Maza, adding a deeply personal note to the ceremony.
A Legacy That Shaped the Bay of Cádiz
More than just a historical record, the occasion celebrated a journey that, despite its challenges, transformed Puerto Sherry into a key economic engine and a benchmark for development in the Bay of Cádiz.
