Jaque Mate’ Takes the Lead at the VIII Puerto Sherry Classic Week

Saturday’s racing in the Bay of Cádiz marked a turning point in the VIII Puerto Sherry Classic Week-Pedro Bores Memorial. The second race of the JCH Spanish Cup outperformed weather forecasts, providing 12-knot winds that allowed for a technical and spectacular day of sailing.

Jaque Mate: Victory and Overall Leadership

The Swan 43 ‘Jaque Mate’, skippered by Sergio Llorca (CN Puerto Sherry), delivered the standout performance of the day. Finishing just 5 seconds ahead of the Cantabrian yacht ‘Severine’ (owned by Gonzalo Botín), the crew secured the top spot in the overall general classification with a total of 4 points.

Conversely, the ‘Gipsy’, which entered the day as the overall leader, suffered a tactical setback after a failed tack. This 12th-place finish complicates their bid to defend the Spanish Cup title, dropping them to seventh in the general standings.

Provisional Standings After Day Two

The battle for the podium remains wide open heading into Sunday’s final race:

  • General Leadership: ‘Jaque Mate’ (4 points), followed by ‘Severine’ (6 points) and ‘Odiseus VI’ (8 points).
  • Classics Division: Led by ‘Jaque Mate’.
  • Spirit of Tradition Class: ‘Odiseus VI’ retains the lead.
  • Época Category: ‘Severine’ has climbed to the first position.
  • Mini Class: ‘Infiel’, skippered by Antonio Aliaga, remains undefeated after two consecutive victories.

A Poignant Finale

This Sunday will feature the third and final race, which will not only decide the champions but will also hold deep emotional significance. A commemorative trophy in honor of Javier Vallejo “Mazinger” will be awarded, with his sister, Beatriz Vallejo, attending on Saturday in a moving gesture of appreciation for the sailing community her brother was so closely tied to.
