‘Gipsy’ Takes the Lead in the Start of the VIII Puerto Sherry Classic Week-Pedro Bores Memorial

The Bay of Cádiz hosted an spectacular start to the VIII Puerto Sherry Classic Week-Pedro Bores Memorial this Friday. With excellent sailing conditions and 10-knot winds, sixteen historic vessels inaugurated the Spanish Cup for Classic Boats, creating a vibrant display of tradition and high-level competition.

A Triumphant Debut for the ‘Gipsy’

The star of the day was the Gipsy, a vessel launched in 1927 and belonging to the Spanish Classic Sailing Foundation. Based at the Club Náutico Puerto Sherry, the host boat—crewed by Petete Rubio, José Luis Vilar, and Club President Valle de la Riva—mastered the 9-mile buoy carousel course. After applying the JCH measurement system, the Gipsy secured victory with a lead of over three minutes in compensated time.

Journeyman Leaders Across Categories

The inaugural race provided a technical test for the fleet, resulting in several standout performances:

  • Época Class: Led by the victorious Gipsy.
  • Espíritu de Tradición: The Odiseus VI (1981), from the Vistahermosa Club de Golf, holds the lead after a near-perfect race.
  • Classic Class: The Swan 43 Jaque Mate, skippered by Sergio Llorca, claims the top spot.
  • Mini Class: The Infiel, commanded by Antonio Aliaga, took the first win against the historic 1902 Madcap.

A Legacy of Sailing Excellence

Beyond the competitive results, the event showcased a unique blend of generations. The regatta features a roster of renowned sailors, including Marcelino Botín, Antonio Piris, and Juan Luis Páez, providing an invaluable learning environment for younger crew members. The youngest participant is sailing aboard the Jenten, a vessel recently restored at the Foundation’s own shipyard.

Looking Ahead: The Decisive Saturday

As the event progresses, the pressure mounts for Saturday’s second race. With the starting time moved up to 13:00, the teams are preparing to consolidate their positions in what promises to be another showcase of elegance and history in the Bay of Cádiz.
