The Bay of Cádiz is getting ready to host one of the most elegant events on the national sailing calendar. The VIII Puerto Sherry Classic Week-Pedro Bores Memorial kicks off today, establishing itself as a premier event that blends tradition, history, and competitive sailing in the unique setting of El Puerto de Santa María.

Official Opening: Gathering the Elite of Classic Sailing

The starting signal is marked by the official reception for the crews, held this afternoon on the terrace of the Hotel Puerto Sherry. Valle de la Riva, president of the Club Náutico Puerto Sherry, will host the event, welcoming owners and sailors to a weekend dedicated to the preservation of naval heritage.

With over twenty boats confirmed, mostly from Andalusia and Cantabria, the fleet promises an unprecedented visual spectacle.

Competition Schedule: Sailing the Bay of Cádiz

Following the initial days dedicated to registration and boat tuning, the action on the water begins this Friday, June 19. The competition will run through Sunday, June 21, with weather forecasts predicting medium winds—ideal conditions for historic vessels to showcase their full potential.

How is equality measured in classic sailing?

Given the disparity in designs and eras among the boats, the regatta is governed by the JCH measurement system. This format allows for technical differences to be compensated, ensuring a balanced and fair competition while respecting the uniqueness of each vessel. The event is also a scoring round for the XVI Mare Nostrum Classic Trophy-Spanish Cup.

Protagonists on the Water: Gems of Navigation

The fleet is composed of units with fascinating histories. Among the standouts are:

Centinela IV: 14-meter classic from Huelva (1972).
Gipsy: A gem of the Spanish Classic Sailing Foundation, launched in 1927.
Livia: A vessel restored at the Puerto Sherry boatyard facilities.
Other notable vessels: Infiel, Buzz Lightyear, Tira Neruda, Oroville, and Severine.

A Special Anniversary for Puerto Sherry

This edition holds special significance as it coincides with Puerto Sherry’s 40th anniversary. The Classic Week reaffirms the marina’s commitment to maritime culture, paying tribute to the Pedro Bores Memorial, a former president and key driver in establishing this enclave as a strategic base for classic sailing in Spain.

The event is organized by the Club Náutico Puerto Sherry and the Spanish Classic Sailing Foundation, under the auspices of the Spanish Royal Sailing Federation.
