28 May Sustainability in action in Puerto Sherry
This Saturday, the marina joins the Sea Watch Network’s Bottom Clean-up with volunteer divers from the Capitán Garfio Club.
El Puerto de Santa María, 28th May 2024 – In recent years Puerto Sherry has been implementing various initiatives to protect the natural environment, promoting responsible practices among its users and collaborating with environmental organisations. As part of its commitment to sustainability, this coming Saturday 1st June, Puerto Sherry will join the Marine Watchers Network to carry out a seabed clean-up, which will be carried out by divers from the Capitán Garfio Club.
This clean-up will help to remove waste from the sea and will also raise environmental awareness among the nautical community. This initiative, promoted by the NGO Oceánidas, will simultaneously mobilise almost 2,000 volunteers, including numerous divers, at various points along the Spanish coastline and also in continental waters.
At each action point, volunteers will not only remove waste, they will also classify it for proper management and quantify it, incorporating this information into a large database based on citizen science, useful for scientists and administrators. In addition, environmental education activities will be carried out to raise public awareness of the importance of keeping our ecosystems clean.
One of the outstanding features of this campaign is the exchange of kilos of waste collected for kilos of food that will be donated to the Spanish Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL), thanks to the agreement that the Network has with Nueva Pescanova. In previous campaigns, the Marine Watchers have managed to remove up to 26,000 kilos of marine litter in a single weekend.
The clean-up will take place between 11:00 h. and 13:00 h. and will be the first, but not the last time it will take place in the marina, ‘We will always be attentive and happy to collaborate with initiatives that help us to be part of the change towards a cleaner and healthier ocean. Anyone who wants to come and help is very welcome. I would also like to thank Pusama, a leading waste management company in the province, for their collaboration“, says Nicolás Figueras, general manager of Puerto Sherry. The City Council of El Puerto de Santa Maria shows its support for the initiative, which will be attended by the councillor responsible for the Environment and Sustainable Development, Millán Alegre.
In addition, Puerto Sherry continues with future projects, such as the implementation of advanced water treatment systems and the expansion of its renewable energy facilities, demonstrating that it is possible to enjoy nautical activities while protecting and respecting the marine environment.
