Puerto Sherry achieves 40% self-consumption of energy thanks to solar energy

The marina moves towards a more efficient and environmentally friendly energy model

El Puerto de Santa María, 22 April 2025. Puerto Sherry consolidates its commitment to sustainability by closing 2024 with an important milestone in energy efficiency: 40% of its annual electricity consumption has been covered by solar energy, thanks to the production of 322.51 MWh of photovoltaic origin against a total demand of 645.63 MWh.

A firm commitment to clean energy

This progress has been made possible thanks to the installation of a solar photovoltaic plant on the roofs of the Hotel Puerto Sherry, which has 500 solar panels of 485 W each. The total installed peak power reaches 246 kWp, with an operating capacity of up to 220 kW by means of 6 inverters distributed in different areas of the complex.

The project has been partially financed through public subsidies aimed at promoting renewable energies, thus reaffirming the port’s commitment to energy transition and the reduction of its carbon footprint.

Monthly production and environmental benefits

May was the month with the highest solar efficiency, with energy savings of close to 50% thanks to a generation of 25.78 MWh. On the other hand, in January, due to lower solar radiation, coverage reached 30% of monthly consumption.

At the environmental level, the plant has avoided the emission of approximately 197.08 tonnes of CO₂ and the consumption of 165.96 tonnes of coal, which is equivalent to the positive effect of planting around 270 trees in a single year.

Planned expansion and alignment with the SDGs

In the coming months, Puerto Sherry plans to expand its photovoltaic system with new installations in the Suites area, as part of its sustainable development strategy. This development is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and international commitments in the fight against climate change.

Leadership in sustainability within the marine sector

The implementation of renewable energies not only improves the port’s energy efficiency, but also positions it as a benchmark in sustainability within the nautical, tourism and hotel sector, consolidating its role as an example of responsible management of natural resources.
